My almost 80-year-old aunt and I usually do not agree about movies, but we agreed on this one. And we didn’t like it.

Of course, then we disagreed. I thought Meryl Streep, whose performance has been praised to the heavens even by those who didn’t like the movie, went all Julia Child when she slipped out of Maggie mode. My aunt, a Brit who experienced the Thatcher years first hand, thought la Meryl was reprising her Devil Wears Prada role.

Where we both found common ground yet again was in lambasting the script, which we agreed made it look like Thatcher was some ditzy ingenue, who just happened to become prime minister because she was an ambitious young thing. It bordered on ludicrous.

My aunt didn’t like the depiction of Baroness Thatcher’s dementia either, mainly because she doesn’t believe in making biopics about the living, which she says is just wrong. I, on the other hand, thought that was the best and most realistic part of the movie.

Despite my major misgivings, I can’t tell you not to see this movie especially if you’re interested in the Iron Lady and the era she was in command.

I recently did a Google search to see how the Scottish Terrier and Dog News was ranking for the term Scottish Terrier and noticed something I hadn’t before.

Notice the image results

A photo of Rasmus (left, top) that I had published on my blog almost four years ago showed up on Picasa even though I had never put it there. What’s worse, Picasa said the photo belongs to me when the version on my blog, which I asked permission to use, is clearly credited to the photographer and owner of the photo Lars Odemark.

Picasa drops all the photo credits and erroneously says photo is mine (see top right)

In the original version, the photo was properly credited and linked with the photographer’s knowledge.

Picasa has done this with more than 700 photos used by the Scottish Terrier and Dog News.

I suspect the fecal matter is about to hit the fan on this one that as far as I can tell has not yet been noticed.

I’m a fan of Amaya although I sometimes find their curries a bit too saucy.

Vigilant Futures, the trading firm that funded Canadian Economic Press (CEP News) has changed its name to Vigilant Global.

Although Vigilant Futures founder Arvind Ramanathan confirmed in an interview with me that his company had funded CEP News, the now defunct news agency had always refused to say who its funders were.

Vigilant Futures is now Vigilant Global with a new look to go along with the new name

CEP News also did not admit that it was run by Marco Gomez, who instructed key staffers not to reveal he was involved in the company. Both Gomez and Ramanathan had worked together as traders at Refco before it imploded.

Had it been know that CEP News was supported by a hedge fund-like proprietary trading company, it might not have been able to access government lock-ups where sensitive and potentially market-moving economic data is released.

Those were the days. Vigilant Futures is now Vigilant Global.

Late last year, Vigilant Futures removed all its executives’ profiles from LinkedIn. Their presence on the business networking site allowed reporters and other Vigilant watchers to figure out relationships and see related searches.

Like the old Vigilant Futures site, the new Vigilant Global site does not have the name of any of its executives on its site and its office photos show no signs of any human presence.

AnnBrocklehurst.com has a very high Google ranking for Vigilant Futures, but it’s not clear yet how high it will be able to rank for Vigilant Global.

Newspapers need to start their own live radio shows

As newspapers everywhere fool around with video, Twitter and Facebook, they’re ignoring the one medium that really makes sense for them — radio. This is especially strange given that the only news media habit the internet doesn’t appear to have changed is radio listening. News junkies like me may have given up our print newspapers and TV newscasts, but we still listen to the radio just like we used to.

The ratings for news and information radio — CBC Radio One in Canada and NPR in the U.S. — bear this out. Overall, U.S. radio listening has been trending upwards since 2005.

So, why is information radio holding on so strong?

1. It tells you what’s happening in the world, offering up a news, weather, traffic and sports package that’s more needed than ever when you don’t subscribe to a newspapers.
2. Terrestrial radio is still the easiest to listen to. While live streaming radio — on a computer or smart phone — is simple enough, it’s not nearly as reliable as old fashioned AM and FM radio quite yet. Podcasts still take too many steps and too much planning.

With the “internet of things” on its way, however, internet radio is only going to get better and more convenient. And newspapers should be entering this key market now. After all, radio shows have been interviewing newspaper reporters and columnists for years because they go places and do things that broadcast reporters often don’t. No radio or TV station in any major market can match the local newspaper for newsroom size and capacity.

By starting their own news and information radio shows, newspapers can showcase and promote themselves and earn revenues. Here’s what they need to do:

1. Make a few smart hires from the world of broadcasting.
2. Build a cheap radio studio
3. Tell employees to give up their gigs with the competition
4. Hit “On Air”
5. Post on Twitter and Facebook that you’re live and people need to tune in
