Investigative reporting on new media scams
I never set out to be an investigative reporter.
Rather, I was interested in discovering new business models for the media, and when I started asking questions about various supposedly successful new media ventures, I found out that they were all hiding something.
I continue to be puzzled that these stories — about Geosign, DexTV and a whole slew of fake news agencies — have been pretty much ignored by the mainstream press. You would think, given the trouble the media is in, they would have been more curious about organizations that were supposedly making a go of it.

Big thanks to everyone who’s passed on information since yesterday’s request for tips about IB Times went out. According to an IB Times source, Johnathan Davis has indeed been overheard talking about how he wants direct access to economic news of the type released in lock-ups. But apparently, he’s also totally clueless about how the [...]

Thanks to everyone who’s gotten in touch re the International Business Times aka IB Times. You’ve provided a lot of helpful information so please keep it coming. Based on your input, I’ve also modified my description of the IB Times staff to make it less harsh. No longer are you young, unqualified reporters. You’re young, [...]

I have to admit that when journalism prof Dan Gillmor and his commenters raised the connection between the International Business Times and various Christian organizations, I didn’t put that much stock in it and saw it as more of a red herring. My theory was the financial backing for IB Times was more likely to be coming [...]

This is an interesting story on Jump Trading, which has a long-standing interest in my website. Jump’s co-founder Paul Gurinas is also named in the Shirley vs. Jed Capital and Harada court case. As a previous business partner of John Harada, he may very well have insights into NTKN’s operations and the advantages it provided [...]

Make of this tale of business incompetence at International Business Times what you will — just like anything else you read on pissedconsumer.com. And then ask yourself why you would hand enough cash to rent this office space to Etienne Uzac and Johnathan Davis, who have no background in news, and are wading into an [...]

Last summer, I published a report on how Paula Midena had gone to work as global business development manager for RTTNews, something that I discovered via the ever helpful LinkedIn. Earlier this month, however, I noticed that Paula was no longer mentioning her ties to RTTNews on her LinkedIn bio so I phoned the former [...]

Reuters put together a list of the 50 biggest claims by former MF Global clients, based on its analysis of about 10,000 of nearly 28,000 total claims. Vigilant Futures (now known as vigilant Global) is 18th on the list with its claim of $10,471,037.

Update: I am trying to find who is financing IBTimes and why. It looks like serious investments began in the spring of 2011. If you have any idea who’s really behind the International Business Times, please contact me at ann.brocklehurst@gmail.com. Your confidentiality is guaranteed. Update April 9: Here is a new post on the connections [...]

The U.S. Department of Labor confirmed this morning that Potomac Radio News no longer participates in lock-ups, but officials were not able to give the exact date it left. Its spot was given to RTTNews, a curious news agency with many things in common with the now defunct CEP News.

Before Vigilant Futures changed its name to Vigilant Global, my site used to show up at the top of the Google search results for the secretive Montreal proprietary trading firm. People came here to learn more about why Vigilant Futures had funded CEP News, a short-lived and questionable news agency that came into existence during [...]
