Linda Tirado’s Poverty Porn

Once upon a time Linda Walther Tirado aka KillerMartinis wrote an essay about what it feels like to be poor. In spite (or perhaps because) of its nihilism and hopelessness, Linda’s story enchanted the internet and went viral.

Linda Tirado Poverty

Linda’s essay was hailed as brilliant, honest, brave, and shared and discussed all over Facebook, Twitter and the Huffington Post. But as anyone who knows a thing or two about poverty could tell you, Linda’s tale was pure poverty porn. Not honest or authentic at all, but designed — like all effective porn — to make its target audience feel good.

Cooking broccoli is so hard, Linda wrote.

Yes, yes, yes, responded her readers.

Planned Parenthood is three hours away and I can’t afford the gas, Linda explained.

Don’t stop, they said.

Smoking is the only thing that keeps me sane, Linda  revealed .

Oh my Gawd. More, more, more, said her fans. Where can we send you money for hitting every poverty talking point there is from junk food to the Patriot Act, and all in one easy read?

Linda quickly set up a gofundme.com account. And within a few days, she had raised more than $60,000 to write a book about what it’s like to live in dire poverty and despair — and also to head to Vegas for some much needed R and R.

If it hadn’t been for a bunch of haters poking holes in her fairy tale, Linda might have been able to keep on fundraising and reach her final $100,000 goal. But trolls did things like actually pay attention to paragraph two of Linda’s article, where she outlines a day in the life of a two-job, full-time student mom of two very young children. Anyone who did the math or actually knows anything about working mothers with babies and toddlers, would see instantly the story was ludicrous. And this is before factoring in Linda’s later claim that she drove an hour through snowy mountains to get to one of her jobs.

Then there was the curious fact that Linda skipped right over the crucial issue of child care, kind of a giant red flag waving. And a bit of internet surfing would have revealed to the “news” organization that spread Linda’s story that — for someone with two jobs, two kids and a full-course load — she spent an awful lot of time online at Jezebel.com, asking, among other things for decorating tips and how to preserve her china cabinet.

The trolls also uncovered that Linda was a homeowner — no mortgage either — who had recently crowdfunded some overdue bills. And she turned out to have multiple Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as internet personalities. Before she became a downtrodden young mom making bad decisions, Linda was a lesbian taking on the Mormon church, a hard-nosed political operator who knew the president, and a feisty fast food franchise manager putting entitled customers in their place.

Linda’s fans leapt to her defense accusing her detractors of being creepy stalkers who didn’t  want poor people to live in nice homes, vacation in Vegas or have an active fantasy life.

Linda herself was a little more circumspect. In a very tl;dr explanation on her fundraising page, she confessed that her essay was not 100% true. “I never meant to say that all of these things were happening to me right now,” she admitted. Then, further demonstrating that poor people can indeed be clever, Linda buried a whole bunch of information about her music lessons and private schools in acres and acres of effusive thanks to her donors.

Linda  also continued to display a certain way with words. She told everyone that her parents “helped us find a house to live in” never actually clarifying that she owned the house even when she talked to credulous reporters.

Linda followed Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s example, coming sort of clean and moving on. She wasn’t going to  let a few pesky revelations spoil her moment of glory. Like any good con artist, she also knew her mark’s weaknesses and that people hate to admit they’ve been conned.

After all, Linda’s fans had gone all out, calling her the voice of her generation or, as the HuffPo put it atop the article where Linda admitted she went to private school and wasn’t really poor, “the woman who accidentally explained poverty to the nation.”

What’s more, Linda was clearly relishing the new role her enablers had given her. Holding forth on Twitter, where she tweeted an astounding 1,500 times in one day, she flattered her newfound fans, entertained proposals from fellow poverty activists, and ignored the annoying types asking for clarification. That would  be letting facts stand in the way of the essential truth, which is, as all right thinking people know, small minded and pedantic.

But it turns out there is one factual line that even Linda’s staunchest supporters wouldn’t cross and that’s kiddie poverty porn. As one gofundme.com participant earnestly put it: “She didn’t claim to have an ill child. Refreshing, IMO.”

  1. For a person that allegedly does investigative work, you certainly didn’t put any effort into determining any of these facts. It seems to me that you just accepted whatever prattle masses with search engines could find, not bother dating, and the spew out as if they were all coherent, comprehensive, and parallel events and time streams.
I am all for an active discourse and a full discussion of the topics that Linda brought up, but I am disgusted to see the extent of online journalism and investigation is to simply look for something that appears to not add up and point at it as if it were proof of something.
As far as the quality of Internet research goes, the Lochness Monster is an accountant in Jersey.

    • Thank you for completely reinforcing my point about the mindset of Linda Tirado’s supporters.

Please tell me a specific poverty issue you’d like to address and we’ll take it from there.

      • I would say that I am a ‘Linda supporter’ but more than that I am a person that worries about suddenly being discovered or going viral and watching the supposedly well meaning masses suddenly decide that my life must be available to them. Then I would get to watch as they ‘uncover’ my life in all the wrong ways and with none of the context in which I lived it.
Part of my question is: what level of poverty and for what length of time must Mrs. Tirado have experienced to justify her talking about the topic?
Another part of my question is does a person have to have come from nothing and still have nothing to talk about poverty?
Assuming she had a privileged upbringing and then lost it are we to demand that a fall from grace or losing money discredits a person from being poor?
And finally, who among us has never started a new blog or social media site with the hopes of showing a positive new version of ourselves only to lose momentum and interest and leave the thing derelict in a few weeks or months? If all of the flotsam that any of us have left on the Internet were all pulled together and given the context that whomever wanted to apply to it, the resulting life could be made to look quite positive or quite negative.
So if the past is a myriad jumble of possible unknowns and missing contextual information the only way to judge Linda on what is happening with this situation is to watch what she does with it.

        • I think you need to give people a little more credit. It’s my experience that they can tell the difference between a full fledged con artist and a regular joe with a few skeletons in the closet. And I also think people are pretty quick to forgive the latter because most of us have a skeleton or two in the closet that we would prefer not to see come out.

The problem in Linda Tirado’s case is that what you call “the context” points to a fabulist and con artist and not the person she claimed to be in her essay. She didn’t just stretch the truth a little bit here and there. She told lie after lie after lie in an effort to put herself forward as something she very clearly isn’t. Her post-viral behaviour also strikes me as incredibly manipulative and narcissistic.

As for who can talk about poverty, anyone can. The question is whether they’ll be credible and taken seriously. And I don’t think Tirado can be taken seriously beyond preaching to the converted.

I don’t believe there’s a bunch of haters out there who want to keep people poor. Most sensible people understand that some people are born poor and others are born rich and it’s the luck of the draw. Most people also want the poor to be able to get out of poverty. The disagreements arise over the best way to accomplish this goal.

I see nothing at all to indicate Linda Tirado has any insights into how to break the cycle of poverty. All she offers are excuses to perpetuate it based on lies.

          • Part of my concern comes from how easily and, yes, flippantly, people will call a total stranger an out and out liar on the Internet where they would never dare to do such a thing in ‘real life’. While one of the strengths of the Internet is that it gives everyone an equal voice, one of the weaknesses is that it gives everyone an equal voice. Not everyone has anything to say (not a personal attack, just a general statement) and some people will spend years working to be experts in a field but online are treated with the same off-handness of a person who randomly comments in a sentence with no punctuation.
The prevailing myth about poverty is that we allow that it happens, or can happen, to anyone, but the only way out of it is always some mixture of hard work, good choices, and perseverance. Which is a re-rendition of the facts, at best. Yes, anyone who is successful has, by definition succeeded, and if you ask for what the definition of ‘to succeed’ is you will likely be told that it is when your hard work and dedication and good choices all pay off. It is a circular argument.
What my interpretation of Linda’s original piece was getting at is that we are so fixated on the idea that success is the goal and that success only comes from these positive life attitudes and decisions and so forth, that we forget that there is a trial and error period before that.
So she suddenly has some success for a piece of writing, and we have no idea how long she has been writing, and that success must be a fraud because that success advocates that there is a problem with calling people who don’t succeed failures and pointing to any negative behavior as the reason for that.
I think that she hit upon a topic people don’t know how to emotionally deal with and so their response is to summarily dismiss not just the piece, but her as a massive fraud. In which case they don’t have to deal with any of it. And that kind of reaction is way more dangerous.

          • “Yes, anyone who is successful has, by definition succeeded, and if you ask for what the definition of ‘to succeed’ is you will likely be told that it is when your hard work and dedication and good choices all pay off. It is a circular argument.”

It’s only circular if the person started off successful — meaning with money, position, education. If they started out poor, it’s not circular at all.

    • ravenpaine, Linda Tirado’s online trail of words is where people are getting the information. Not conjecture. Not trolling. She posted herself that she owns her house – in October 2013. She posted herself in late November that she was off to holiday in Vegas without the kids, shortly. She posted herself that she manages a restaurant rather than being a “night cook”. She posted herself that she is a hard drinker and prone to “drunk yells”. She posted herself that she is vengeful online. She posted herself on one of her many blogs just how privileged was her upbringing. What she did NOT do was tell the hundreds of poor folk who thought they were identifying with her, during her shameful online begging exercise, was that she is actually under full medical insurance currently, and that regardless of failing to pay to have her teeth fixed from the insurance check a few years ago, absolutely has the resources, between her three income household and home ownership, to pay the $4,000 bill. Who in that financial position who isn’t totally immoral, would beg for funds through a website designed for charity fundraising? Linda Tirado is a disgrace.

        • It’s not begging – but who set-up the account – you or Linda???
And why would your raise your GOAL six times (based on the amount of money that was coming in).

Gofundme.com will only require donors to pay once the goal is reached – in this case Linda Tirado raised $62,138.00 in less than 2 weeks (with an arbitrary goal of $62,053.00 set after six times raising the limit.)

My question is – how would someone that is considered to be impoverished raise the goal say from $30,000 to double that?

          referenced here…

          http://www.gofundme.com/59yrak

          • Linda set up the account. Presumably she raised the goal because she could.

What interests me more is why she stopped. I think she could have easily raised $100K, possibly more, but she knew it would bring more scrutiny so she stopped.

        • I’m much less concerned about Linda Tirado’s opportunistic scam than I am about journalists swallowing her story and failing to elicit, e.g. in her live Huffpo interview, the facts. So the “trailer” was allowed to expand from being a temporary, emergency shelter option, quickly followed with the gift of a substantial house, to letting people think that she still lives in a trailer. One of the defenses thrown at skeptics like me is the “trailer” myth. If a mainstream journalist would just ask the questions and require truthful answers!

          • The trailer was just used briefly when her grandparents that raised her come out to Ohio and demanded she move back to Utah based on her lifestyle and for the sake of her baby. What that lifestyle was is open to debate.
After that Linda and her husband purchased a house – how much the grandparents contributed (to the purchase) is an open-ended question. In any case, when she penned her Poverty piece if you want to call it that – or refer to it as ‘fictional autobiography’ as she does – she was not destitute but living in her own home. Not working as a night cook but as a restaurant manager (at the time of the post) and going to college (which she since has dropped out as of this time).

Her Fb page shows updates as of late September using a Droid (smartphone) phone which a lot of people still do not have the luxury of using.

          • Yeah, the HuffPo interview was what a former colleague of mine used to call a “blow job.”

The reporting’s been really bad. I do take some comfort from the fact that most orgs ignored the story because they knew it was full of holes.

          • Thanks for that Ann – I was beginning to think I was the only person that was seeing the fraud and all the other people being yes men – or spin doctors – more likely the latter. – Ted

      • I’ve seen your name wandering around some of these types of posts as well, Luxxe and I appreciate that you have your facts straight. And by facts straight I mean that you took things said by Linda and arranged them in the most sinister and negative fashion.
Do people say they own a house when they have it paid off or when they are making payments?
And the work history thing is just a lot of not paying attention to the dates stamped on posts and the way that so many of us routinely update every website when something in our life changes.
If anyone who is convinced she is lying can find any information that proves such a thing that isn’t Linda’s own words then please give us some of that information.
In the meantime quoting what Linda said about Linda is perhaps not the best way to determine reality if you think she is lying to start with?
Can we get some research triangulation in play to verify some information from the outside?

    • Ravenpaine can I just explain to you just why I am so angry about Linda Tirado’s opportunism – and I am calling it a scam because she had every opportunity to back out of the begging before it went out of control. Raising the funding goals is what marks her out as a deliberate scammer; the leadup to that could well have been explained as “a post intended for limited consumption that went viral”.
I have actually quite openly corresponded with Linda, and while she is prolix online, she is selective regarding whom she replies to.
I am angry with Linda because I am aware of just how poor are America’s poor, and for her to identify as “poor” is nothing short of a travesty. In my correspondence with Linda I outlined a case study of true poverty in America that I was aware of through a documentary. This was a family of six who had had to move to Florida, presumably to avoid having to pay heating bills in the cold, and were renting a single motel room just up the road from Disneyland. No, actually, just four of them were sharing the room. Two of the children had been removed and were living as welfare dependents (I am not familiar with US terminology for children in state care). The father of these children bussed to a job which paid him some $3 an hour. This family had no car! There was footage of the mother cooking dinner. I think the allocation for Dad was two slices of white bread and patty of hamburger meat. No vegetables. Not even a lemonade with the meal. The most heartbreaking of the footage was one of the sweet “in care” kids, “home” at the motel for a “family visit”, and Daddy playing baseball with them in the motel grounds. Yep. This man was resisting self-pity and depression and alcohol, and spending time with his kids outdoors, as close to being a middle-class dad as he could get. (The family had dropped hard from the middle class, bit by bit, after he lost his job.) That husband and wife were holding their marriage together – presumably only just.
Do not tell me, Ravenpaine, that it is OK for this privileged Linda woman in her three-jobs household, driving a near-new car, owning her own large house, airily discussing how to decorate the kids’ bedroom with a fantasy forest, with a crate of Diet Coke on her kitchen bench, writing about “soothing Mr Martini”, and off to Vegas for her hols, to profit from writing about the poor, through a contract with some scabrous literary agent.
Not when the sheer courage and resilience of that brave Florida family is seared onto my brain. Rather than waste your efforts on a spoilt ingrate, go seek out some poor people to champion, Ravenpaine!

      • At risk of being summarily banned and with the particularly negative set of impressions I have been laden with in this crusade to understand why some people are so negative against a random good thing for one person, I will respond.
Yes. Linda is not the poorest person that has ever lived and she has not seemed to suffer the most depressing series of terrible events that can occur to a person in one lifetime.
Nor did she say that she had. He initial essay was a response to people remarking that they could not understand why a person who is poor would do irresponsible things or continue to make ‘poor’ decisions.
it got picked up and went viral. She suddenly saw herself with an opportunity to speak about her own opinions and interactions with poverty. One of the first things she admitted when people started donating money is that she would take time to do research and track down stories not unlike the one you mention above. She knew that she didn’t have the worst experience, but what she did have was an opportunity to talk about poverty in a way that people were listening to.
So she took the advice of those that were donating and kept accepting money. She looked at the figure and the opportunity it provided and started thinking bigger. She started out hoping to fix some of the problems in her own life, like anyone would. Then when she had more offered to her than that she took the time to try and build something more lasting. Much in the same way that a person that is good at pottery might hope to open a pottery shop, Linda decided to take the momentum and try to do something with it. Momentum is an awfully difficult thing to control or direct and when she went to a tax attorney to figure out what options she might have she decided that it was better to stop, redirect the giving to others, and start on her book.
The people who decided to think she was more destitute than she was were not stopped when she did more to explain her situation. They were not dissuaded after hundreds of words in which she was trying to clarify her position in the midst of a life changing event happening.
And whenever she tries to clarify some point or another she is called out as a fraud and a liar because her clarification doesn’t match up with YOUR PRECONCEPTION OF HER SITUATION.
I am as interested in this debacle as I am because of the scope of the negativity that people are expressing. People are so intent on saying that things could be so much worse that they don’t stop to be amazed that we live in a world where things could BE SO MUCH WORSE. And a person, Linda, that wants to address those issues and who everyone is listening to, is being undermined and attacked before she even gets started. (Outside of the crazy insta-fame thing, which seems largely inconvenient).
That is why I ask why it is so important that people prove she is a fraud. That is why I ask what they would rather have her do. Put yourself in the situation and ask yourself what you would have done.
And the first answer you give cannot be “I wouldn’t have lied” because you cannot actually establish that she did. The only thing you can establish is that the impression given by the first essay and her actual situation are not congruent. And that is not her fault, unless you want to say it is her fault for a lack of foresight in writing a thing on a forum, where as a regular contributor she was writing to an audience that already understood chunks of the context.
        So that is one bit.
And the other bit, is in looking at all of the things she has and saying that those are not hallmarks of the poor. She has a car and a house paid for and arranged grandparents and between two people they work three jobs and she also goes to college. Would you prefer the grandparents not help out so that she would have to access that aide from the state only to not be given nearly as much help as that?
Isn’t the part where she was poor, or at least there are statements to that effect at some point in the timeline of 30 years, and is now emerging from that poverty, partially in conjunction with all of this hard work and discipline stuff that everyone is espousing not a good thing? Would we prefer that anyone advocating for the poor also be so poor they don’t have time to think? Why not let someone with some first hand experience, some political connections, some insta-fame, and some seed money get out there and try to make a difference?
Why are you so against that?

        • Again please state your agenda in defending Lina Tirado – and btw you state her car and house are paid for – are you making a statement based on some sort of inside personal information (a personal connection to Linda) because that information is simply not available online.

Sorry – please go on with your rant – I do not mean to interrupt.

        • Ravenpaine, in the light of the facts, what was her financial need in the first place? She only needed $4,000, she has said, to get the teeth fixed. If she was choosing to spend a few thousand smackeroonis a year on alcohol and cigarettes rather than her teeth, how is that a “need”, when that cigarettes and alcohol money would have paid the interest on a redraw to fix her teeth? Why the dissembling on the status of her house? Referring to “helped to get a place to live”, while keeping the full loaded reference to “trailer”, was short of full disclosure in that context, where she was in the middle of arguing her “poverty cred”. There is actually NO evidence of actual poverty in her timeline. Ever. There’s what appears to be a reference to a natural disaster that flooded her dwelling, and some dysfunction, and some adolescent rebellion, a bit of standard student poverty, and a lot of choosing to shoot the breeze on Jezebel – hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of shooting the breeze on Jezebel [er, what "hard work and discipline"?]. I think that your brand-new turn of referring to the family money as somehow OK in the context of claiming poverty because it avoided the state having to provide financial aid to Linda, is both a red herring and a scraping of the bottom of the barrel.i As an attempt to justify Linda’s egregious and dissembling online excuses, it just doesn’t wash. And I note that now you are admitting that Linda Tirado has a good car, a house, and wealthy family helping her out, and her online begging has enabled her to drop the “pin money”, $175 a week part of her considerable family income. In your earlier comments you have been denying that any of those facts were true ……….. so it looks as though you are on track to ending the “plausible denial” stage you appear to be at.

          • I do not know what ‘pin money’ is. And you just did the same thing in referring to me as you do to her, you find one piece of information I have not mentioned before and suddenly it becomes super clear that I’m admitting the ‘truth’ and that I was previously lying. I don’t know what your ceiling looks like. You haven’t mentioned it, therefor if you ever mention it I can say you were lying about not having a ceiling! Ipso facto!
            To the moon!
Again, all you have, all anyone has, is an article she wrote, more statements she has made, and a bunch of angry statements that there are intentional lies strewn in the middle.
I have been on the net for two days on various of these types of posts making comments about and against the various ‘scam’ clamiers and making other rational explanations for the way the information presented could be listed or interpreted. Everyone that is already convinced she is a liar is so convinced because that is what they want to believe. They are not hunting facts they are simply hunting phrases to prove what they already believe.
This is the same tactic used to prove any religion, it is the same tactic used to oppress any viewpoint.
And I’m tired and its stupid and I can’t keep choking down my levels of disbelief or weathering all of the attacks at my agenda because it isn’t your agenda.
As an analysis of rhetoric this whole thing is cringe worthy.

          • I notice, Ravenpaine, that Linda Tirado has stated that someone was “throwing away a piano”, and she has it, and she “may get it tuned”. In among her lucid posts there are lots of random curve balls. Indeed, Ravenpaine, you are right in this sense: who would know how many of her posts are true? We do indeed need to be a little selective. I have personal experience of dealing with a brilliant, beguiling sociopath, so I recognise the very clever skirting around the truth, to the befuddlement of normal, even very bright people. The sociopath I am referring to had medical and legal professionals entranced and wrapped around his/her little finger. I assure you, any charismatic, fantasist sociopath will leave a trail of destruction in his/her wake. They often choose vulnerable partners. They fool most of the people, most of the time. But generally they bring themselves undone eventually, through a misstep, or when their stories get so complicated they can’t keep track. Or they just miscalculate. For example, part of the evidence of Linda Tirado’s deceptive intent is that she spent considerable faux and spurious words on gofundme to the effect that she was getting advice from nutritionists [which, by the way, does not support your contention that the gofundme was all about supporting her writing]. In response to her article, not surprisingly, professionals were keen to help this poor woman who was subsisting on oatmeal because her teeth wouldn’t allow her to eat solid food (viz. Jezebel), and fell over themselves to offer this poor woman their professional advice. She actually removed a lot of that material from the record when it no longer fitted with her updated narrative. She had, until forced to do a bit of retrofitting and limited clarifying, been quite comfortable letting the public think she was this poor, lower-class, ignorant woman in need of basic nutritional advice, not a middle-class, cultured private school-educated, privileged woman fully cognisant with Whole Foods, the virtues of kale, arabica not robusta coffee, single-origin slave-free chocolate, and all the niceties of hipster nutrition! That little misstep, though, was too minor to harm her cause.
Often a brilliant sociopath will only come undone when someone with previous experience of their ilk recognises the modus operandi and will call them on it. Thank Heaven, 99.9999 per cent of interactions with Linda Tirado are online, not RLF experiences, and very few people will be burnt beyond a quick lesson learned and a hundred bucks of their hard-earned trousered by Linda through gofundme. Her literary agent would be wise to cast around the annals of PR disasters brought about by “brilliant writers” who turned out to be fantasists and liars, and have cost many a publishing house a goodly slice of its reputation. Note that Linda Tirado, besides not having any track record as a writer, doesn’t in fact have a book topic, and is casting around on Jezebel seeking ideas from the harpies for her book. It appears she is going to pass on the option of poverty advocacy, and her new agent wants her to write in her sharp, GT, humorous vein. (They have worked out that that is almost certainly the only option that won’t invite scrutiny and bad PR.)
Oh, and Ravenpaine if you aren’t familiar with the term “pin money”, read your Pepys!

          • What a brilliant reply.

I have suspected from the beginning, Linda will flame out and the book, if it ever happens, will be a memoir about mental illness.

As for the agent, aen’t no agent until the contract’s signed which I highly doubt it is.

          • Thanks Anne! One of Linda Tirado’s skeptics has informed me that she spent some time last week and the week before capturing ALL her Jezebel activity online (much of it now deleted) , all the revisionism on her articles and posts, and is comparing her claims of her “I have ONE hour a day spare!” with her time spent online. Some interesting comments (now censored) are among the material, including some references to a work history in a completely different “services” industry from catering, that killermartinis expressed some concern about coming to light. She also captured some 200 images that Linda Tirado has deleted from her multiple online profiles. Oh, and several hundred “waiting for moderation” and rejected posts that show that many, many people are querying Linda Tirado’s story!

          • Honestly, I have no idea how anyone could ever have believed this story in the first place.

A mother with a baby and a three-year-old working two jobs (which we were led to believe were full-time) and taking a full load of university courses.

            Not. Humanly. Possible.

            An hour to spare? ROFL.

More like the Monty Python skit: “I had to get up in the morning at ten o’clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.”

          • Ann, Linda Tirado has hired an assistant (name is Crystal) to handle all the new found fame and manage all the emails that she is receiving – ironically paying her the state minimum wage.

          • Ha ha! Probably time for the Daily Show or such to take the mickey out of Our Linda. Now thanks to your Monty Python reference, I’m reading her posts in a Yorkshire accent! “One hoondred and seventy fahv dollars a week for workin fulltime and driving an hour back and forth each way through snowdrifts? Loooxury!!! Then I ‘as to clean t’ house all up. And I ‘as to soothe mah hubby so he don’t have t’flashback and strangle me in me sleep. Then I is off to mah oother fulltime job, knockin’ on doors like, ‘an telling President Obama ‘ow to do ‘is job. ‘E’s mah bestie, y’know. And did I mention that I also ‘as to do me full-time study, like? Anyone seeing photos of my ‘ouse would think I ‘ad a cleaner, cuz it’s clean as a pin! Nooooo – I does me full time study and me two full time jobs and me three hours on Jezebel AND I keeps me house immaculate like. Goomption. That’s wot it takes. Elbow grease. I ‘as many, many more, much much more to tell youse all about ‘ow I spends me days, like! Us poor people, we ‘as to find more time ‘n anybody else. That’s in our nature like. Grindin’ poverty, that’s wot it is. That’s me bloomin’ lot.”

        • When you stop making inane comments about broccoli and Vegas, you actually start to make more sense.

It seems like you feel Linda is a person who had a good thing happen and now people want to take it away. And those people should stop.

So in your zeal to protect Linda and allow her to benefit from this wonderful thing that happened to her, you ignore reality.

That reality is that Linda is a serial liar who wrote a piece of fiction, a glob of poverty talking points designed to appeal to Linda’s Jezebel audience.

And guess what? It worked. People loved it and if they’re as sincere as they say they are, they’ll buy Linda’s book.

Unfortunately because the story Linda originally presented turned out to be fantasy, she may not get a traditional agent.

But that need not hinder her. Linda’s viral success means she a has built-in fan base and given all the emails flooding her in-box, she should have a great mailing list as well. She’s perfectly positioned to go it alone as an Amazon indie writer.

Of course, there is one thing she will have to do and that’s actually write a book, which is a lot harder than writing one essay, especially when you haven’t figured out yet if you’re going for fiction or non.

So you see, Ravenpaine, at this point it’s really all up to Linda and her fans. If she finishes her book, and you and all her other supporters buy it, she’ll be headed for long-term success.

And there’s not a thing anyone can do to stop her, except Linda, who’s proved really good at that in the past.

  2. Linda Tirado uses the same photo with her infant daughter (which btw was taken in 2011) on her Facebook page. Also interesting that she lists her work as being a Democratic Campaign Consultant and being fluent in German and Dutch. Her last entry was posted with a smart phone (Droid) in late September before she penned the “fictional autobiography” (her term not mine).

    • Have you ever created a resume and then not updated it? I’m just checking if you need to be dismissed from your current job for having a better job at some point in the past.

      • In the event you did not bother to scroll down and read my other comments…

This is the 1st entry in Linda Tirado’s blog dated July 2011 (link listed below or copy and paste into Google) “This…is for therapy. As in, I am about to embark on a “therapeutic journey” and I know they’ll tell me to keep a journal. Shrinks like to do that. So, I’m starting now. I figure this is the best way to make it easier on whomever finally is the lucky therapist the clinic sticks with me. So, dear faceless therapist, read on.

I know I’m crazy. I’ve been in therapy since long before I can remember, except for the past few years.”

        http://killermartinis.wordpress.com/2011/07/08/begin-at-the-beginning/

Linda Tirado describes her work as a fiction autobiography but to me it is a ploy to do exactly what she planned to do – extort money from people by pulling on their heart strings – that’s what con men do best.

        • The problem with this theory is that she is either a masterfully terrible con artist. Someone so good at conning that she was able to use a chance even to go about the conning. Or someone so terrible at it that once their ‘con’ succeeded it instantly became clear that she was lying because of all this foolish ‘evidence’ she had created.
Mostly this theory is just hoping for too much. Is there any actual victory if tomorrow the New York Times printed her complete financial history and interviewed everyone she had met and said definitively that this thing was false? Would that change anything?
What is your endgame here? What is it that you want to see, and why?

          • The end game is that she setup a gofundme.com account specifically to accept financial donations based on the article that she wrote in which she portrayed herself living from paycheck to paycheck working two jobs and trying to take a full course load at college.

BTW, she does not work as a night cook but is in fact a restaurant manager. She does not have any problems with living accommodations as she and her husband actually own their own home. She even has a spare set of winter wheels for her car that she stores in her shed (a nice luxury that most people cannot afford).

She in fact Tweets 1,500 times/day so how can you do that when you can only sleep 3 hours a night?

Basically if you cannot see the con then let me explain it to you in simple legal terms – she is guilty of accepting money under false pretenses.

All you people are delusional that think otherwise.

      • Actually to address your query – the answer is no – because resumes are done in descending order (current job listed first) and I am self-employed as a forex trader so there goes your theory!

  3. Here are some quick thoughts about Linda’s narrative.

The blog post of hers that wound up going viral was written back on October 22nd.

In her post, Linda talks about attending school and working two jobs. What no one has bothered to clarify is: How long had she been attending school, and how long had she been working each of those two jobs?

Well, at the end of August she wrote a blog post about quitting her job and going back to school. And while perhaps a person shouldn’t be quitting their job when they are allegedly destitute, my impression is she was HOPING to get a scholarship.

So in addition to attending school for less than two months, we know she must’ve been working job number one (restaurant cook) for less than two months. What about job number two? The political activist job? She got hired for that at the beginning of October.

So the grind of “two jobs and school” had only been going on for 2-3 weeks when she wrote this viral post about her miserable existence. Also, she dropped out of school at the beginning of November.

Those are all interesting details, because they raise the question of what exactly her life had been like prior to September 2013? My hunch is that she never worked more than one job, didn’t attend school, and spent a TON of time on the internet. But it would be nice to get a full timeline of events.

    • I expect that a book length format would give her time to address all of the issues that a ranting essay written emotionally to explain to some intolerant people on the Internet about how it is that poor people can make mistakes, let alone continuous mistakes, did not.
One of the great things about humans is they tend to write about the information they feel is pertinent at the time so as not to create hugely long posts that lose the headline. Newspaper articles are full of the idea that you give the best info first and the details later. Writing an essay in college is about formatting and choosing and using as few words as possible.
Also, you will have to explain to me how a person returning to college in their late twenties is supposed to get a scholarship by not having a job? You could possibly have meant a grant or some kind of assistance? I suspect that is what you meant but chose the wrong word. I don’t know you, but I’m willing to assume you meant the plausible one. And I do that because it is much easier to have a discussion with someone when you accept the concepts they are talking about without needling them on every word.

      • Linda talks about returning to school in this post: http://clashtalk.kinja.com/well-just-need-a-life-plan-by-tomorrow-please-1173227006

The first two lines of her post say: “So I quit my job and enrolled in school for fall semester. They’re willing to work with me on getting my scholarship back and things of that nature,”

In the comments she says again that she’s trying to get a “departmental scholarship.”

So, yes, scholarship is the right word. Now…as for how much sense it for a woman who turned 31 at the end of August to be the recipient of a scholarship…? I don’t know.

Also, are you suggesting that Linda set out to write a long, ranting emotional post, or that she set out to write a compact, newspaper-style essay? Or perhaps a college essay? In any case, I agree that a full-length book MIGHT afford her the chance to give a fuller timeline.

        • I suspect that this is a causality problem. Quitting the job is clearly not going to earn her a scholarship. (If there is a scholarship awarded at some university for epic job-quittery, that is a school to go apply to…)
I think these are two different statements jammed together by the format of blogging, which is the format in question. My example of newspaper and college essay are to show that we understand different formats for different things. Blogging is neither of those two but it is also not strictly a journal entry with an intended audience of one.
See, and by giving you the credit that you knew what you meant (even though I misinterpreted it) we arrived at an overall better understand than would have happened if I simply said you were wrong. By allowing that you were correct, in some form, we discovered that you are correct in some form. And some form of correct is about the best we can get on the Internet.

          • Mutual understanding is groovy, and I notice that some of Linda’s detractors also have a bit of a problem thinking fourth-dimensionally. (Ted, if you read this, you have understand that people do switch jobs over time.)

Now…I have an idea why some people (including myself) might get piqued over the blogging format in particular, and why they (including both Ann and myself) would be driven to look for holes or omissions in the narrative.

i want to organize my thoughts, and try to explain that part later. (Things are a bit busy where I am right now.)

          • Drew – let’s look at the facts first. Linda states she is a night cook on her post when in fact she is the restaurant manager. Her other job is a bit sketchy so I won’t elaborate on that at the moment since she took a leave of absence and went to Las Vegas with her new found fame. Referring to her writing as ‘fictional autobiography’ certainly gives her some sort of immunity but I am afraid her credibility is ruined based on her own childhood (statements that she made on her own blog), current living conditions and what she actually penned and then accepted donations – which to me seems like it was premeditated right from the get go. She was using a smart phone to update post on her Fb wall two months ago (which I cannot even afford to do!) and is now Tweeting 1,500 times/day..

Like I said before – I love this country – what’s the term?

There’s a sucker born every minute!!!

        • As of right now Linda dropped out of college and went to Las Vegas to promote her book (dare I use ’cause’) – she can in turn write that off as a business expense from the $62,138 that she drew from gofundme.com donations.

          What a country!!!

          • Look, Ted. I understand you feel betrayed by this thing. Or you feel that you are a crusader that is helping all the saps from being duped by the clever and crafty woman. And I also understand that my sarcastic tone undermines the point I am trying to make, but you are just so frustrating.
Linda makes a comment that she is going to Vegas on the 18th, which was some number of days before she hit 60k. She lives not so far from Vegas and is celebrating a friend’s birthday as well as her husbands. If the friend happens to be from Vegas then this is hardly a conspiracy. She isn’t going to promote her book as promoting a non-existent thing isn’t so possible and if she is scamming people I think that advertising for something you don’t intend to do is a bad tactic.
You mention that she isn’t a night cook but is in fact a manager based on posts that she made. But as Drew points out she quit a job a few months back. We could assume that the job she quit was the manager job and then she picked up the night cook job. I love that you refer to her work for a registered non-profit as ‘sketchy’.
The largest inconsistencies that you, and people like you, keep trying to shove on the public is the idea that she had a childhood filled with opportunity and that she either A) must be a loser if she is now poor and that is all her fault, or B) she couldn’t possibly be poor now because she wasn’t at some previous point in time. Because we have already established that things that once happened stay true forever.
Which may sound like hyperbole, but since you missed what I was getting at with the reference to resumes before, clearly I needed to hit the nail harder. Things in life change and it is not always in an upward direction. Nor is it always in a downward direction. Your need to interpret everything she says, things she is saying to try and clarify or answer questions, as deceptions or aha! moments just perpetuates my claim that you are purposefully trying to take her down and that you formed this opinion and are reinforcing it rather than trying to learn more.

          • I’m not betrayed at all because I did not donate one dollar to this scam artist – and how would you be privy to Linda’s travel schedule to Las Vegas with dates and who is she meeting with – can you enlighten us – or are you creating spin as Linda Tirado – inquiring minds want to know!

  4. Just check her Fb page posted in my reply above and you can read her comments that she posted on her wall. Here is her answer about her childhood and I quote Linda here from her blog…

“I started kindergarten a year early. I went to an exclusive private school where we didn’t have grade levels. They grouped us by age and we had workbooks in different subjects depending on our ability level. When my parents transferred me to a closer school with normal grades, they put me in fourth grade. I was seven. They wanted to put me into fifth grade, but my parents thought it would be too difficult for me socially. I had private music lessons from the age of four. I was an award-winning singer, piano, and flute player by seven. I owned twenty-three instruments when I was twelve. I toured Europe as a featured soprano the summer after I graduated high school.”

Feel free to copy and paste the quote in Google click on her blog July 8th 2011.

    • Okay. Since the imbedded comment thread thing for this particular format doesn’t allow endless replies I will place this here.
How am I privy to Linda’s travel? Well the same way that anyone else would be I suppose, as Ann linked to in her original post above on the whole Vegas thing, it takes you to a this comment from Linda: “Done and done. It turns out that my best friend’s birthday is two days after my husband’s. So we’re all spending two nights in Vegas without children.”
So, by reading the information presented and not making any particular interpretation of it I was able to determine that she is going to be traveling to Vegas for two birthdays. Then I used my powers of interpretation and made some guesses. And they could be incorrect guesses, her friend might not be from Vegas or the country. Perhaps they just chose Vegas as a great place to have a celebration. It is one of those things that Vegas advertises itself as.
And way to keep it classy with general name calling. Go society where we are free to just say whatever hateful things we want without consequence.

      • Oh c’mon, Ravenpaine. People who are serious about getting out of poverty don’t go to Vegas for a a vacay get-away. It’s a very simple concept.

        • Because people who are in poverty are not allowed to spend any money on anything that isn’t just food, clothes, and a roof?
The assumption that she is completely destitute is as crazy as the assumption that she is an upper-middle class scammer. She is also being encouraged by many of the people who are donating to her to do these types of things. Somehow they think that taking a vacation with your new found good fortune is a great way to convince yourself that you deserve good things? Maybe they are trying to upset the usual pattern of depression by trying to convince her that she is deserving of things.
But that wouldn’t fly here, where the general need is to push that she should be ashamed of herself for all of the lies everyone is so convinced of. Ted is the best as he couldn’t even read this post well enough not to freak out when portions of it are mentioned to him.

          • Freak out – baby I’m cool – I did not deceive anyone – just trying to point a spotlight on a scammer is all – and your responses are sketchy not being affiliated in any way with Linda Tirado – or are people getting a bit nervous and you creating the spin?

          • Go to a movie, Raven, or go camping.

You are discrediting yourself with this silliness.

            Also, it’s really tiresome.

      • “How am I privy to Linda’s travel? Well the same way that anyone else would be I suppose, as Ann linked to in her original post above on the whole Vegas thing, it takes you to a this comment from Linda: “Done and done. It turns out that my best friend’s birthday is two days after my husband’s. So we’re all spending two nights in Vegas without children.”

AND THAT WOULD BE POSTED WHERE ON THE INTERNET? YOU SUPPOSE?

ANN LINKED INTO IT HER ORIGINAL POST? I DON”T THINK SO _ SHOW US THE LINK – OR MAYBE ANN CAN DO SO.

WHAT DOES ‘DONE AN DONE’ MEAN AS A REFERENCE TO LV???

BEST FRIEND’S BDAY 2 DAYS AFTER HER HUSBAND??? – WHY DOES SHE MENTION HIM AT ALL – HE IS NOT EVEN MENTIONED IN HER POST AS BEING A CONTRIBUTOR TO THE FAMILY’S FINANCIAL WELL BEING.

JUST THE FACT HE HAS POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME FROM AFGHANISTAN AND THAT YOU HAVE TO SEARCH FOR THAT – NEVER MENTIONED BY LINDA IN HER PORN POVERTY POST.

        • This from Ann: And within a few days, she had raised more than $60,000 to write a book about what it’s like to live in dire poverty and despair– and also to head to Vegas for some much needed R and R.
And the ‘head to Vegas’ sends you to this link: http://killermartinis.kinja.com/take-some-of-that-money-and-go-have-a-damned-vacation-1466817671
And that is where I got all of my info. From the very article you are commenting under where you are happy to spread your own ‘research’ which tends to be posting quotes from a person talking about sections of their life that you intend to make sound like they happened yesterday at the latest.
And maybe she doesn’t mention her husband in every post because she is writing more about her and isn’t super comfortable with which stories you tell about other people.

          • BTW, from your link meth users lose their teeth due to the constant use of the drug. There is no way a 30 year old person would be subject to losing their teeth in United States with the privileged (and that means educated) background that Linda mentions in her blog. Someone else mentioned that meth was cheaper than smoking cigarettes – perhaps that is the case.

  6. Linda will do more to keep people in poverty than to help them out of poverty. I was born to a single mother on welfare who was also emotionally and physically abusive. I made it out of poverty by making good decisions. I had no one to help me along the way. Yes, I stumbled, but I fought like hell to not end up like my mother. Now she claims people like me are just lucky. She has no idea what it’s like to dig out of true poverty.

    • A lot of people who make it out of poverty are helped by an adult who takes an interest in them and encourages them, a teacher for example.

Or by a government program that works as opposed to providing perverse incentives to stay poor.

To me the right kind of help is a positive thing along with making good decisions.

    • Or she could be advocating for the idea that even though your mother started out emotionally and physically abusive that she might have still needed and should have received help. If at some point in her life your mother had not been so thoroughly condemned for her ‘bad decisions’ that maybe she would have been able to overcome them.
We talk about overcoming adversity as if it were an inevitability. But it isn’t. We accept that not everyone is good at everything. Not everyone is going to play a sport or write a book or sing in tune, but we don’t hold those things against people (all the time, anyway).
What we do hold against people is sucking at life. And there are lots of ways to suck at life. But instead of saying, “That’s okay, lets find something you are good at,” we toss these people out of our calculations for humanity and then blame them for not succeeding. it is heartbreaking to work with the poor and the mentally challenged and the unfortunate because so much of what is happening to them, be it from the outside or from their internal workings, is so very unfair.
And even people who have been close to and seen problems such as abuse, poverty, or drug use will still take the time to denounce those things as if they don’t have a human element to them. People are not bad by choice, they are bad pretty much because of a lack of choice.

  7. Also important to point out that Linda Tirado raised her Dollar goal level six times eventually raising $62,138. She did this when she saw the amount of money that was coming into her account and the way gofundme.com works is that the people that pledge a donation will only be charged if the goal dollar amount is achieved.

BTW, same photo posted (dated July 2011) with her infant daughter at the time.

Hi. I’m KillerMartinis. If you are here on this page, it’s because of this. That’s the essay that started people talking about poverty in a way that we don’t often see

  8. Well I see that the Raven has wings! Ravenpaine has been leaving nice comments on my blog all day! Playing kind of nasty with Darling though, and that just wasn’t nice.
I was going to send him / her a link to this very blog, as I think it pretty much nails it!
    Good job by you Ann!!!

    • It isn’t as if you can’t find Ted over there on almost any comment thread on any site that mentions Linda. And I’m only being as nasty, brutal, judgmental and awkward as everyone else that puts being against Linda over being interested in thinking through the situation. While there is an objective reality to all of what is happening here, too many people are content with making their claim that she is horrible or a fraud or that she is the voice of the poor and not enough people are willing to actually discuss why this essay has affected so many to such an extent.
I would prefer to get off the web and do something useful with my day, but figuring out how people think and why they make such assumptions as these, is, at least for today, a very useful portion of what I would be doing otherwise anyway.
So, yes, keep making me out to be the negative one for being against the people who are against the person. I can play the villain.

    • Like any charismatic sociopath, Linda Tirado has a bevy of brainwashed cult followers – Linda’s are on Jezebel, egging her on. Anyone who has had dealings with sort of personality in real life knows to steer WELL away. It looks as though the internet is a space where Linda can thrive without the sort of calling-to-account that friends and family provide.

  9. Why are you generalizing my mother as if you know her? You don’t know if she was condemned for bad choices do you? You are making assumptions about a person that you don’t know. Maybe my mother was like Linda, someone who was provided with therapy and an elite school.
“we toss these people out of our calculations.” I don’t do that to people. Instead of saying, okay let’s find something else you are good at, I say, you suck at life, let me help you not suck at life. But I also ask the person to be proactive in making their own life better. If a person can not try to overcome the hardship of cooking broccoli, life in general is going to be a huge obstacle.
“you suck at life, but that’s okay, lets find something you are good at” What does that even mean? If you can’t manage life, are you going to be able to manage much else?

    • I am sorry that made some blanket statements about a person I do not know based upon a few words I saw about them on the Internet.
In attempting to make a general point about how we treat those that are having problems I attempted to make some grounding statements based in my expectations of your situation and failed.
My choices are to stick with trying to make a general point, or I could just start yelling fraud because you said one thing and now are saying more things that don’t contradict that first thing but don’t’ necessarily reinforce it.
And people like Ted who are hell-bent on proving some kind of gross conspiracy to defraud the generous by one random woman that had a thing she randomly typed suddenly become the focus of millions of people, well those are good people to call her out on every seeming mistake. She should have been a much more immaculate human that has never once said anything or done anything countermand to her best interests or existence.
But, I do apologize if you felt hurt or slighted by my use of your mother as an example. I had good intentions in doing so but perhaps did not have enough information to make the claims I was making.

      • Who’s mother are you referring to as Linda was raised by her grandparents – let’s clarify the spin – and let me google your username – you might be posting as Linda Tirado – would not surprise me.

        • I was referring to the mother of Kimberly, who was not given a name. I was also responding directly to Kimberly, so that might have should been obvious from context, but I am already not really giving a lot of merit to your ability to take things in context.

        • This is too easy – all of you who are posting spin to this article and are trying to discredit the people making correct conclusions based on facts – reminds me of the same thing when the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) hired people to create spin on all the websites whenever there was something negative written about Lance Armstrong in light of him taking performance enhancing drugs – it went on for years – but now the truth came out – he is the biggest sports fraud in history. Time will prove the same thing in this case.

          • Ted, way to strawman the hell out of that argument. You amaze me with your abilities at reasoning and rhetoric. Note also that I am trying to talk to other people and have a discussion about substance, but with you I am just attacking your lack of… so many things.

          • Why – what’s the connection that you have to Ann’s article that you feel the need to talk to other people when the title of the article is discrediting – “Linda Tirado’s Poverty Porn” – again you trying to create spin – using a Droid phone by any chance?

        • I didn’t use the term ‘sub-human’ until she did. I mentioned humanity and how we don’t always treat everyone as ‘human’ so I guess that is where that comes from. I inferred it and will live with people seeing it as something I said, even though I didn’t.

  10. Yes, the “right kind of help” is a positive thing, but even with the right kind of help people will become impoverished.

    • Poverty is an inevitable thing in any society because people will sometimes fall down for reasons either internal or external.
And poverty can do some great things for giving people a sense of clarity and grounding, much in the same way a diagnosis of a terminal disease can do.
The problem isn’t that it exists (which as an inevitable problem we have to just accept), it is that poverty can be a large hole that people don’t get out of fast enough. If we use the disease metaphor the implications are clear, the earlier you get diagnosed and the more comprehensive the treatment the faster the recovery will be.
When we let someone wither with a disease, or with poverty, for too long, it becomes much harder to get them out of the situation and back to a healthy place. So we need to work on systems that help individuals on an individual basis and can adapt to changing times and internal resistances.

      • Although that early diagnosis stuff is sometimes true, in other cases, early diagnosis doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference. Everything simply depends on the nature of the disease you have.

The same applies to poverty. Sometimes people, for whatever reasons, can’t overcome their demons.

All we can do is put in place effective programs/system and incentivize people to make the right decisions. After that, it’s up to them.

Personally, I don’t think a system that tells people it’s too difficult to cook broccoli or use birth control is the right one.

        • I love how the cooking broccoli portion of the essay is so taken to task. The other jokes in the essay were left largely alone, but the idea that many people don’t know what a vegetable that isn’t freeze-dried or canned looks like? That cooking a fresh vegetable in a way that makes it retain nutrients and is tasty without covering it in cheese sauce is an affront to the idea of cooking or the poor.
And any mention of Planned Parenthood leads to some kind of crusade about people that shouldn’t have children. Condoms at colleges? If only we gave out cheap or free birth control everywhere instead of in select places that some people have little to no access to or are simply embarrassed to go to.
If we want a solution we need to make the poor not feel ostracized. Which is difficult to do because they are ostracized. And then they are told they shouldn’t feel bad, but are further told that they are responsible for their situation as if they didn’t know that.
We need to uplift these people by being actually supportive instead of pretend supportive.

          • You’re starting to be incomprehensible. I have no idea what point you’re trying to make about broccoli.

BTW, I used to live near Chinatown. Low-income immigrants and refugees came from miles around to buy broccoli, cheap frozen seafood and dry goods.

Pretty soon, they’ll be buying houses. That’s the way it goes.

Oh yeah, and none of them went to Vegas because they needed a break.

          • I guess that’s what meth does when you still trying to comment and sound intelligent – this is obviously directed at Ravenpaine – not AnnB – for clarification.

  11. “or I could just start yelling fraud because you said one thing and now are saying more things that don’t contradict that first thing but don’t’ necessarily reinforce it.”
I gave an example of my life. I didn’t in any way, shape or form state that people who want to overcome poverty have to do it like I did or they are subhuman. I’m simply stating it can and has been done without assistance. Do you think that just because I am stating that I made it out of poverty without help that I think people not like me are subhuman? Again…assumptions.

    • Well. I will break this down. You claim that Linda’s writing will make things worse for the poor. I’m not certain why that is your claim but there it is. You mention a mother that had problems and that you escaped those problems. From a genetic sense you are lucky to have not been given the same burden, or from a social sense you are lucky to have gotten assistance that helped you avoid those problems.
Luck is a factor in escaping poverty because luck is also a factor in becoming poor.
You are the one making the assumption that those that do not escape poverty are somehow subhuman, that they are not up to snuff. If escaping poverty is only done by being dedicated and working hard then the people who don’t escape are lazy. That is the binary opposition of the same success rhetoric I was commenting on previously
I don’t fault people escaping problems or becoming better people. I have a problem with people overcoming and obstacle pretending that if they can do it anyone else who doesn’t do it must be inferior. Which is not something you explicitly say, but it is something that you let linger in your distaste for someone like Linda talking about why giving in to problems is rational.

  12. “So we need to work on systems that help individuals on an individual basis and can adapt to changing times and internal resistances.”
Systems such as the United Way, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Planned Parenthood, Boys and Girls Club, Feeding America, The Y-MCA, Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Care USA, Samaritan’s Purse, etc? Yes, government programs need revamping as they do not teach how to thrive but to merely survive. Yet, there are hundreds of public charities that pick up the slack.

    • Well, clearly, they don’t pick up enough of the slack because it continues to be a problem. But at least there is a large variety of individuals and organizations working to counter the problem. If everyone was supportive of these initiatives I suspect they would do more.
Too much of our efforts are spent on attacking the way the aide is given and not enough emphasis is placed on the idea that aide is being given.

  13. Human beings have choices and you are marginalizing that fact. I have a problem with people claiming there are not enough resources to help people out of poverty when there are a ton of resources. It’s that those resources are not convenient enough for a society used to instant gratification. I don’t think that anyone else who doesn’t escape poverty is inferior. I don’t treat people who are poor like they don’t matter or that I don’t care what their life is like. The fact is when anyone mentions that people should also be held accountable for their actions, people hit the roof and cry foul. Giving in to problems is not rational, it’s the opposite.

    • The risk you run in demanding that people be held accountable for their actions is in having a holistic understanding of how they came to those actions.
So if we hold everyone equally accountable we refute that they are individuals with individual issues and situations.
We need to hold people accountable but we cannot hold everyone to one definition of success. Some people can overcome a lot of bad baggage and still not reach the same level of success as someone who started at that level, but many people will make negative comments about the person that overcame because they don’t have the same success.
We see that folly in many levels of society. We don’t’ treat anyone equitably, but we can at least treat the unfortunate better.

      • Who made you an expert – can you list your credentials to make comments like these – or is this just your opinion as a spin doctor changing from an attack mode of spin to preaching to people?

      • Ravenpaine, I’m holding you accountable for not making any sense.

Please cut out the jargon and self-edit.

        You’re incomprehensible.

        • I’m trying to hard to make some points to readers with narrow agendas. It is my fault. If I were a much better writer I could persuade and dissuade at a whim.
And I don’t think single sentence answers get anyone anywhere.
Because discourse shouldn’t be trying to prove a negative.
Self-editing is a great idea. Self-editing is sort of the antithesis of internet communication, though.

          • You seem to have a pretty narrow agenda yourself — accept no criticism of Linda Tirado whatsoever.

          • Your answers at this point sound like political double-talk – and why are you here for the the last 8 hours if this does not concern you in any way directly?

          • Ann, there is a big difference between accepting no criticism and allowing people to use random statements as proof of things.
I could easily have jumped on any other person that was being commented on in the internet sphere. So many of these interpretations, good and bad, are so polarized as to defy probability.
            People are people.
I’m sure she has has many faults as she does good points.
But why are some so convinced of deceit and unable to consider other interpretations of any of the information?

          • Linda lied. That is a fact. She admitted it. It’s not open to interpretation.

Nor am I particularly interested in her motivations although I can see why others might be.

I don’t care that she raised more than $60K for herself. And I don’t think some soup kitchen would have gotten the money if Linda’s post hadn’t gone viral.

What interests me more is the attitude of her followers and why people lap this stuff up.

But, all I can say after reading your comments is that you’re seriously out of touch.

By far the vast majority of people know that poverty does not include Vegas vacations and home ownership (and yes, you’re considered an owner when you have a mortgage).

I have no idea what compels you to try and pretend the opposite and frankly I’m a whole lot less interested than I was at the start of this thread.

    • ” It’s that those resources are not convenient enough for a society used to instant gratification.” And this sums up a lot of the problem today. However, people do not want to admit that. They are too scared to be called a, dare I say, conservative or greedy or they hate the poor. However, I have had firsthand experience with this. I have met people who have excuse after excuse why they can’t do something as simple as go talk to the community college about financial aid or the state ran rehabilitation services about getting training to enter the work force again. I have offered my time, my car and my gas to help them. However, most of the time most do not want to bother. It’s too much work, they would rather have someone drive to their door stop and drop off what they need. I remember one time I had to find out if I had contracted a disease from someone. I had no car, no money and a low paying job. I did some research and found out I could go to the country health department and get testing on a sliding scale. Even though I had no money I borrowed money for a bus pass, took the 2 hour bus trip (actually only 20 minute drive by car) to the health department. I got my testing, some free literature and bag full of free condoms and other sexual aids. When it came time to pay on the sliding scale my total came to zero since I made so little. I cannot tell you how many times I have told others about what the health department does and NO ONE goes. And some even have cars, it’s maddening. Eventually someone buys their sob story and gives them money or pays for their doctor visit when it wasn’t even necessary. This is what the whole Linda ordeal reminded me of. I have slept in my car before with my dachshund for 3 weeks before I found a place to stay. We never went hungry and we never went without gas. I also managed to find ways to keep myself clean each day. I was even in college at the time. Sometimes I slept in the college parking lot. It can be done, but there has to be willingness to do it.

  14. My agenda is I’m a writer and I am interested in how people think, how they write, and how they reach conclusions. My intention is to be a better writer. My credentials are numerous years reading and writing.
My agenda is also to get people to think. And, yes, it seems on occasion that I am squashing as much discourse as I am encouraging, but that is because so much of how people are taught to read, to think, to intellectualize is lacking in any kind of instruction these days.
I am in no way perfect, but I encourage other people to try a little harder.

    • That’s why your posting under a fictitious name right?

and please point out any ‘discourse’ that you are encouraging because I have not found any

Also, please share with us your numerous credentials that you so proudly boast of.

    • Not in any way – I don’t think there was any negative reference to poor people in any of the comments – in fact I think most people would welcome helping these people (including myself) – just not contributing to scam artists that use the poor people (poverty) as a cause to gain wealth.

  15. Interesting point you make about the Chinese as my girlfriend is from China. Six years ago she was married and she and her husband had two houses. To make a long story short her husband lost so much money gambling at the casinos that they lost both homes to foreclosure. She was just a housewife raising her son who was 12 years old at the time. What followed was a divorce and a loss of two homes but she did is inspiring – she knew how to cook so she went to work in a a Chinese restaurant managing the kitchen which employed 20 people. She worked (and still does) 6 days a week and 12 hours a day. In 24 months she managed to save to purchase two cars and qualify for a mortgage. When I met her two years ago she barely spoke English but now she is pretty much fluent. When she needed to go shopping she used a bicycle or a bus – purchased all food fresh and cooked herself – most dishes just cost pennies – all veggies steam cooked. When she was tired she drank green tea – not smoke a cigarette. She does not know what is even on the menu at Wendy’s or McDonald’s for that reason. She is my idol. That is why I have so many comments here on this post.

  16. Linda Tirado has started actively baiting the public. Her moment of glory has to be her reference on Huffpo that she plans to spend part of the $60,000 – a thousand dollars thank you very much – on a comfy blanket for her bed. I am not poor – quite comfortable – but I think the most I have ever spent on a blanket is around $300. And that felt pretty extravagant! “I might take a thousand just to do things like get a really comfy blanket that fits the bed perfectly,” says Our Linda. What a nice thing to say to people who have dug deep, thinking they were helping a poor writer’s bad teeth. Enjoy the blanky, Linda! Hopefully you won’t be able to sleep a wink under it, should you develop some semblance of a conscience!

  17. From an article in the EpochTimes.com 11.23.13

    http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/370324-linda-tirado-aka-killer-martinis-gets-over-50000-after-poverty-thoughts-essay/

This is an amusing quote – you have to laugh at this one!!!

(LAST PARAGRAPH of the interview) By Zachary Stieber, Epoch Times

“I read your piece and quite enjoyed it, however it became tainted once I came to this page,” said Ashley Salyer. “Why do you keep increasing your goal amount? Have you even begun to write? I was poor growing up and in my early adult life, and now I am considered ‘middle class’ because I have busted my butt by couponing, searching for deals on every purchase I make, and keeping a very strict budget for my family. You have raised more than what my “middle class” family makes in a year, so why is it that you need more? I am a writer myself and I know that the amount of money you have raised already should buy you plenty of time to finish a book on this topic, and with all of the publicity you have received you should have no problem with publishing. You have been blessed already. Don’t be greedy.”

    • Here is an explanation for what a credit default swap is –

Linda Tirado mentions this in the video interview as a tactic by referencing words that people heard before but have no idea what they mean – in this case she uses it to try to make herself look intelligent and the viewer (and interviewer) wondering how would she even know that and scratching their head in amazement.

But in reality she just crashes and burns – because anyone that is in the finance business (Ann being one as a reporter and investigator) knows that CDS are sophisticated financial instruments that are traded on an exchange – in no way they affect your savings or checking account (which are insured by the FDIC anyway).

She has built a house of cards and thinks she can bs her way through this – never going to happen Linda – I assure.

      Here’s the definition:

A credit default swap (CDS) is a financial swap agreement that the seller of the CDS will compensate the buyer in the event of a loan default or other credit event. The buyer of the CDS makes a series of payments (the CDS “fee” or “spread”) to the seller and, in exchange, receives a payoff if the loan defaults.

  19. From Linda Tirado’s blog dated 11.24.13

Written by KillerMartinis On November 24, 2013

“I have been privileged while poor, because I am fucked up and spent decades in therapy, because I have been given access to these words, I am well-suited to this.”

…”because I am the sort of person who reads Woodward and Stiglitz and also the sort of person who has lived with three prostitutes who were great because they always paid the rent on time.”

“When people say that I am perhaps not legitimate, it is maybe sort of true if you mean that when I was at the low points I did not have time for blogs and since I do now I am not at the bottom. That is a true thing.”

“Be very clear about this, please: I am quitting one of my day jobs. The one that is an hour’s drive through snow in the mountains. And I have actually nailed a bigger contract with my second job, which pays better hourly anyway.”

“I will pay a bill or two to the people who have loved me that are struggling. I might take a thousand just to do things like get a really comfy blanket that fits the bed perfectly.”

  20. In addition to plush gigs like working 60 days for Cynthia Neff and earning $3,254
in 2009 (Oct-Nov period) (which has been confirmed by an independent source – Virgina Public Access Project)

    Link: http://www.vpap.org/committees /profile/money_out_details_exp enses/2677?vendor_id=184126

Linda Tirado also worked as a secretary in 2011 for the County Democratic Party in her current hometown of Cedar City, Utah. No snowy one hour commute through the snow in the mountains to work as a night cook.

    http://www.ironcountytoday.com/view/full_story/13325178/article-County-Democratic-Party-has-yearly-convention?

        • When was she supposed to claim it? Did she even deny having held it when asked?

Basically, you guys have no actual, empirical evidence that Linda Tirado lied about a single thing. I get that she’s an uppity liberal woman who fills you with rage but that is not evidence of wrongdoing on her part.

          • Linda does not fill me with rage at all. I’m interested in grifter types, which is why I was attracted to her story. And I’m also interested in the people who fall for grifters, which is why I’ve tried to draw them out and understand why they are so invested in propping Linda up.

As for evidence, you keep asking for it and then dismissing it, which makes it hard to have any kind of discussion with you.

      • WOW – a comment from otherviewsfromhere that actually demanded that his $10 donation be returned that he made on gofundme.com to Linda Tirado – which he received from Linda’s assistant (she is being paid minimum wage to work for Linda because she is Tweeting 1,500/day) to manage the accounts. The voice of reason out of nowhere!!!

        • Hey Ted…what the freak is YOUR problem?
You are way out on this one pal…
Why do you think I ASKED for my donation back?
You’re coming after me because I called you for stooping so low as to call Donna what you did? Seriously?
Some things you just DON’T do Ted…you can disagree with the woman, but NO man has any right to call any woman what you did.
Oh…did you really think you were being clever the way you did it? What are you….2????
I don’t agree with Linda Tirado, and have not from very early on. You turn on me because I stand up for some civility on your part?

I want nothing more to do with the likes of you, and I think maybe Ann should try to reign you in a bit as well, seeing as how you are using her blog to do it!

          • You asked for your money back because you felt you were duped – you said it in your blog and now you have a problem with someone that leaves a follow-up comment to the the fact that is no big deal to drive 3 hours to Las Vegas, NV to “celebrate” but it is a problem to drive 3 hours to go to the nearest Planned Parenthood (which is in fact in Cedar City, Utah).

          • I edited out the comment about Donna. Not acceptable.

Hope it hasn’t scared you off, Otherviews.

  21. Oooh…Vegas!!

Newsflash: For those of us living in the Western U.S., going to Vegas is no big deal. It’s driving distance from Utah and there are plenty of cheap lodging, food, and entertainment options. Really, not everyone stays at the Bellagio. Also, Las Vegas is a very large metropolitan area with a lot of residents. Tirado might have – wait for it- family who live there!

None of you wannabe sleuths has produced a shred of evidence that Tirado lied about anything. All you’ve done is huff and clutch your pearls over how she’s not suffering enough to fit your arbitrary criteria of what a poor person is supposed to be like. Shame on all of you.

  22. This is an outstanding piece, bravo to you Ann. I’m one of the suckers who donated a small amount before I realized she was using the thoughts of Others, and that she’s not remotely poor by any meaningful standard.

The post in Groupthink about quitting her job and going back to school really floored me too. Plus the stint as a lesbian in that ridiculous article. She’s just awful. I really hope this blows up in her face as there are actual poor people out there struggling to have a roof over their heads and decent food in their stomachs.

    • Linda Tirado aka killermartinis makes it up as she goes along. e.g. on Jezebel in response to posters querying why she had another baby while supposedly destitute, she came back with a bizarre ramble about how she rarely gets periods ,hardly bleeds, and when she didn’t get her period for many weeks she didn’t realise she was pregnant (leaving conveniently open the interpretation that she might have aborted had she known, in case that tack might have aided her story).
She trips herself up constantly however. Her carry-on about how Planned Parenthood is too far away for her to access, is contradicted by her claim that she drove an hour through snowdrifts to get to her restaurant job. (She claims that that job was fulltime, but also claims that her paycheck was $175 a week. Elsewhere she posts that losing “two shifts” in that job would cost her $40, because in that moment she was still claiming actual grinding poverty. And appears to have forgotten the “driving an hour through snow” claim. As if she would have commuted two hours for $20 pay, even if she was a night cook, and not the manager she actually worked as.)
Those rambles, by the way, were mostly internecine Jezebel conversations, before the stakes were raised, and before her post went truly viral.

      • There’s also a Planned Parenthood in St. George, UT which is only 45 minutes away from Cedar City, UT where she lives. Although I assume she would say that SOME people live 3 hours from a Planned Parenthood, which I suppose is probably true.

  23. Ann, I saw your comment above about not thinking Linda planned this to happen. I do think she wrote this with the intention of extorting money from people. In this blog ( http://www.thenation.com/blog/177350/crowd-sourced-escape-poverty# ) they said, “When her sudden fame hit, she’d just started a part-time contract with a disability-rights nonprofit, and the boss, impressed with her evident fundraising abilities, invited her to come aboard full-time.” On her gofundme page she writes about being offered a better position AFTER the success of her poverty porn as you call it (brilliant btw.) There are also places, as those who have posted above have stated, where she claims to have met the president several times, but of course she could be lying. Working in politics “helping win elections” as she claims I’m pretty sure she knows exactly how to make things happen. It was obvious from all her writings surrounding the poverty blog that she has a strong political background. Everything she writes about were all subtle political talking points. I mean she even brought up an autistic boy at one point. I couldn’t help but laugh, because it just felt like more and more pandering. They say you cannot con a con and as a reformed con coming from the loins of another con, I smell a con. Ha ha! Once again I really enjoyed your writing.

  24. What is with this post? Is Linda Tirado daring to pretend she isn’t White?
    http://killermartinis.kinja.com/posts/1469326667/reply
I have rarely been homeless or without a safety net of at least friends; the time that I spent homeless was brief and during the young fuck-it years, which isn’t the same thing as being an adult. I’m only a few shades darker than white, enough that people think I am a lucky girl with tanning.

  25. Those who have actually studied Sociology know she is doing more harm than good. Her wikipedia defined “poverty” piece is full of stereotypes and bad choices. Bad choices can lead a person to be broke. Linda was broke. Poverty gives you NO choices. She is a privileged woman who didn’t live up to the expectations of Cranbrook or of her parents. So now, she has labeled herself as part of the working poor, which is absolutely false, to gain sympathy and con people. She was fully capable of saving to get her teeth repaired, she just CHOSE to smoke and drink instead of save money for “much needed” dental repairs.
Her tweets that it is other peoples problem that they took her piece out of context is truly telling of her personality. Yet, her platform is we can’t hold others accountable. If that is the case, then give people their money back!

    • Ann is a private investigator as well as a journalist with credentials such as Editor of the Toronto Star. There is not an ounce of hate in any of her writing – just objective facts – only listing self-incriminating quotes by Linda Tirado herself.

      • Hey Ted, whose mouth piece are you?

Where do you get the resources to stay connected and keep posting all the negative articles you can find?

Oh, I know, could it be those self-righteous and envious haters that do not want the truth above poverty to see the light of day?

The poor are becoming self aware that not all their problems are due to their own causes and that the political economy has much to do with with the reasons of their miserable conditions.

So Ted, tell us all what is your and Ann’s agenda?

Ah, yes, no progress but just the sheer please of envy, for envy’s sake.

As the internet defines you: HATERS!

        • Resources? That would be the very same way that Linda Tirado posts updates on her Facebook page – via Droid phone.

Negative? I never posted anything negative – just used links to other sires or as references to back-up the comments that I was making.

No agenda – it’s already well established that Linda Tirado scammed people just Google it if you do not believe any comments here on Ann’s site.

          • Nervous? About what?

That she has given you all a glimpse into what it is to live poor in America?

Now, go do something productive, build or create something instead of creating idle vitriol.

          • I don’t need some scam artist to give me a glimpse what it is like to be ‘poor’ in America as both my parents moved here from Eastern Europe with my brother and myself and two suitcases back in 1971. Within months we were enrolled in private Catholic Elementary school – not because of people donated money to them – but because both my parents worked 16 hours a day (two eight hour shifts) in a textile mill (many times in 100 degrees or more inside the mill).

That work ethic is lost in the current generation sorry to say – mostly because people are looking only for instant gratification.

        • If you cannot see that Linda Tirado scammed people at this point – then you need to reference the articles that have been posted in the Comments Sections of this post – otherwise you will be viewed as someone that is trying to create spin.

Ann as a private investigator and was drawn to this case as a reporter and I think she did a great job in exposing this fraud.

        • Is it just me that shouldn’t use the term poverty porn or everyone?

Linda did not describe reality and she has admitted it. She put together a bunch of talking points about what it’s like to be poor. She used unflattering stereotypes of poor people and insulted poor people who make good decisions.

The people who believe in Linda’s article do so because they don’t understand poverty at all and this is the image of poverty that gets them off, a completely fake one unrelated to reality, just like porn.

Anyone who has an understanding of working mothers and paid any serious attention to paragraph two of Linda’s article would realize in a second that it has nothing to do with reality.

          • “Is it just me that shouldn’t use the term poverty porn or everyone?”

You can use it but don’t expect no one to criticize that when you’ve produced no evidence that’s what she was engaging in.

“Linda did not describe reality and she has admitted it.”

She did describe subjective reality and it was obvious to me that every observation she made wasn’t about her exact situation at the time or even about herself.

“She put together a bunch of talking points about what it’s like to be poor. ”

Another baseless accusation. Are you saying Tirado is not, and has never been, poor? Where is your evidence for that?

“She used unflattering stereotypes of poor people and insulted poor people who make good decisions”

Not sure what was “unflattering” and her essay wasn’t about “good” decisions poor people make. She was responding to friends of hers who questioned why poor people seem to make bad choices.

“The people who believe in Linda’s article do so because they don’t understand poverty at all and this is the image of poverty that gets them off, a completely fake one unrelated to reality, just like porn.”

That’s just gross, and another unfounded assumption on your part.

“Anyone who has an understanding of working mothers and paid any serious attention to paragraph two of Linda’s article would realize in a second that it has nothing to do with reality.”

Wait, are you now accusing Linda Tirado of NOT being a working mother? What special expertise do you have on that subject that she doesn’t? As for your suspicions about the second paragraph in her essay, perhaps if you’d reached out to Tirado before wildly accusing her of fraud she could have explained what her daily schedule was. That’s what a good journalist would have done. It’s what Michelle Goldberg did.

          • Donna, bits of truth had to be winkled out of our cunning and cashed-up colleague Linda Tirado – upon exposure. Hence her lengthy explanations and caveats and reversals. By the way, she posted on GT about half way through the gofundme that she was talking to a lawyer about setting up a non-profit with the money. Presumably to encourage donations. She has gone very quiet on that one, but it’s on the record! Since then she has posted that she is going to spend some of the money on luxuries. Utterly contrary to the supposed tenor and intention of her original article and subsequent gofundme campaign. If you read back through all her material, she has clearly been around politicians for a long time. She is singing from the politicians’ “denial and minimal truth” songsheet …

          • Donna, your continued presence here is proof of the fact that I am open to criticism.

Please point out where in the original essay Linda said this wasn’t actually her life, but a composite. People read it as a true first person story because that’s exactly what she said it was. Where does she say this is, as you put it, “subjective reality,” whatever that is?

Yes, I believe Tirado might have slipped temporarily into poverty because of all her bad decisions and habits.

No working mother, who gave it a moment’s thought, would believe the situation Tirado described in paragraph two because it is not humanly possible.

And once again, Linda blocked me. Also, there is nothing wrong with an essay in which you don’t speak to an unavailable subject especially when you quote her own writing. And finally, IMO, Michelle Goldberg’s reporting on this story was a total failure.

  26. This monologue is an excruciating 14 minutes – it gives the viewer a glimpse what is going on in the head of Linda Tirado. Uploaded yesterday (11.03.13) by Linda herself. It just reinforces my belief she is a meth user.

Perhaps someone in the medical field can comment whether a cavity can lead to losing more teeth or getting your mouth infected with bacteria which in turn will result in a “constant low-grade fever” which affects the inner ear and leads to balance issues.

    • Have you seen the comments on this video? People are still defending her and singing Linda praises. They are in complete denial of the truth. It is absolutely mind blowing. Then, they claim the rest of us are jealous, because we know “she hit the nail on the head.” How delusional are these people? Is this how people really feel about the poor or those in poverty that they are just about poor decisions, bad teeth, bad eating habits and excuses? Someone even made the comment that the article Linda wrote exposed the bad decisions the poor make, so we can provide them help so they no longer make poor decisions. SERIOUSLY?!?! We have control over other people’s decision making? That seems to go against the idea of having a choice, does it not? The consensus over there is that Linda is great and some still think it’s her in the article! No one listens or pays attention anymore. They have these little fantasies worlds they have all built and no amount of the truth is going to change their minds. Let me state that one more time, the majority of the people are still devout followers. Speaking as a Christian, if there was ever an argument an atheist could use to make me stop and think it would be the Linda example. That so many people can follow a fairy tale believing it is real, so what does that say about the story of Jesus. It makes me stop and think now. Ha ha! (Still not a good enough argument for me though. :-p )

      • I actually think the tide has turned against LT. Gawker did a pretty damning piece, which is ironic given that Gawker birthed her in the first place.

As for the supporters, that’s what drew me to this story in the first place. I wanted to figure out their mindset and how a story that was so very obviously untrue went viral with so few questions asked.

What I’ve learned is some people don’t read very carefully so they got suckered.

And it confirmed an old lesson that some other people, no matter what, just can’t ever change their mind or admit they were wrong.

  27. Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug, meaning that it temporarily increases alertness and awareness. It is an addictive stimulant drug that strongly affects the central nervous system in the brain.

Methamphetamine enters the brain causing a constant release of the neurotransmitter dopamine, stimulating the brain cells, enhancing mood and body movement. Meth produces a sense of euphoria and excitement, causing users to be prone to abuse and addiction. A person usually becomes addicted when they use meth as a stimulant, because it enhances the sensations of pleasure, sex alertness, and the ability to concentrate.

There are several signs to look for if you suspect meth use

1 incessant talking 2 rapid eye movement 3. weight loss 4. lack of personal hygiene 4. loss of teeth

Meth is very different from other drugs, detoxification for alcohol and other drugs may take hours or a few days, meth will remain in the persons system for six weeks or longer.

The first two to three days of detoxifying a person may sweat profusely, have shaking or trembling in their hands and legs. They will have flu like symptoms such as a low grade fever.

    • They still didn’t cover all the facts in the gawker piece. They would do good to browse the comments a bit deeper within the blogs they are getting their notes from. It’s in the comments where you can find the real dirt on Linda. There was no mention about her claims of having had dinner with Obama and meeting him several times. There was no mention of how after the “success” of her poverty piece she was offered a better position in her current job, because she displayed her fundraising abilities. They didn’t mention the blog where Linda is thanknig everyone for donating money to help her pay her utility bill. There are a lot of pieces to this puzzle and once you find them all and start putting it together it’s quite obvious Linda is a scam artist. I know the type, hell I have been the type. I could go into more detail, but I don’t want to ramble. Ha ha! The gawker piece is still even more fluff. Just an apologetic piece trying to get some sympathy going for Linda. I have zero for her. If she was really so torn about receiving donations they why did she keep raising the limit. The excuse that was she was encouraged to do it by friends doesn’t fly. I know if I want the truth I go to people who will be honest with me. If I want people to blow smoke up my ass and say what I want to hear I know where to find them as well. Linda is not stupid. And all these pieces being written want us to believe that somehow Linda stumbled into all this. Sorry, but I’m calling it …. BS!!

      • Hopefully the “friends” advising Linda Tirado will sit her down and gently suggest that she hand the gofundme proceeds to charity. That way, she might – might – find that the public might read or even buy some of her writings. As things stand, though, I simply can’t see a reputable agent picking her up, or any sales warranting an advance. ( I also can’t see, if she hangs onto the money, that being treated as an “advance” from her public and fans and cult followers. No way will this wastrel spend it wisely on day-to-day living and subsidise writing work.) She’s wanly stating on twitter that the reason she has been MIA is that she has been working on her writing. Funny that! Her creative explosions over the last year have not prevented her from constantly posting on GT, plus heaven knows how much internet activity under burner names.
Sigh – LInda has backburner excuses lined up, too. There’s the damaged husband, for starters. She will get lots of “why I misspent the gofundme money” mileage out of thatty. She has been laying the groundwork already. Hubby apparently is so damaged he can’t even put out the trash. Apparently Linda spends ALL DAY micromanaging him. I’d love to hear his side of the story! I bet he is the one who has kept their house spotless (viz the photos). (What was that about cockroaches everywhere? )

  28. Yes, Jonestown! That is what I felt like ravenpaine’s incoherent rants were like. Drink this kool aid for your own good!

  29. “We have control over other people’s decision making? That seems to go against the idea of having a choice, does it not?” You are absolutely correct! It is mind boggling to watch all of this unfold.

  30. Now, having capitalised on 4 million views as clickbait, willingly, for a tidy profit of 62,000 smackeroonis, she’s posting on GT that one of the few journalists who called her to account thus: “Dude, tell everyone thanks for going to bat. I told that [gentleman] I wasn’t going to talk to him at all on the record. He agreed. I hope the clicks were worth the karma. But I saw you guys and I love you.”

She has told her cult followers that she is very busy; according to posts by said followers she is using burner names to counter criticisms all over the interwebs. So no wonder she has been pretty much silent on her twitter account!

  31. I hope the $61k (yes her amount has gone down I doubled checked after someone here mentioned it) was worth all this. She’s pissed quite a few of us off. I know she’ll continue to be on the radar of many long after her 15 minutes are over. Too many of us want to see just how this story ends.

  32. Her “Sex, please” article about her husband really made me feel sorry for him. She’s on the internet broadcasting if she should tell her husband she is thinking about/going to cheat on him or wait until she has a “thing” already going? Her needs aren’t being met by her husband who has PTSD, so what’s a girl to do?

  33. Here’s another illustration of Linda Tirado’s questionable (also highlighted on a reddit post where she boasted herself about having abused one of her “night cooks”. See someone’s post above). This is before the scam was exposed, and while she was in the absolute high of media attention, with media people and documentary maker apparently courting her:
“So I have become “a breath of fresh air” when I accidentally tell influential people to fucking do something because I thought they were some college kid asking for help on a project instead of well-known filmmakers.”
That was on around November 25. Oh, how the mighty are falling now!
It is rather a bad look when people thrown their weight around the minute they feel they can. Can’t you just picture what Linda would have been like on the campaign trail, putting down underlings? The minute she can abuse a famous person, she is posting that she gets a kick out of it. Personality disorder.

  34. GroupThink aka GroupDrink (as in coolaid by way of Jonestown) has circled their wagons around LT aka KM (KillerMartinis) referring to anyone that goes against their fearless leader as ‘haters’ and are singing their praises for LT by posting follow-up posts that in light of all the evidence against LT – this is simply not true (oxymoron intended) – because LT is just being “lumped in with other internet hoaxes” (in this case referring to the CNN article).

    referenced here: http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/03/tech/web/web-hoaxes-2013/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Comments on GroupDrink to the article: http://groupthink.jezebel.com/oh-looky-1478611099

Nice use of language don’t you think?

However as far as my observation from the ship deck – anyone that makes subsequent statements only to reference a previous statement that had been made (online) is trying to create spin by covering a lie and KM has been preoccupied with this on her Twitter account since November 25th.

But this is all an exercise in futility as time and more evidence will prove that LT misrepresented her position (already well established) and profited by accepting donations that reached $62k – the exercise by GroupDrink is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic!

  35. NEW YORK TIMES…

“an essay on poverty that prompted $60,000 in donations until it was revealed by its author to be impressionistic rather than strictly factual.

… they represented the lightning-in-a-bottle brew of emotion and entertainment that attracts readers and brings in lucrative advertising dollars.”

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/10/business/media/if-a-story-is-viral-truth-may-be-taking-a-beating.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0

  36. “You kill people with your power, with your money. Sometimes you kill them on the pretext of working for their good. It’s true they don’t bleed.” For me, that quote perfectly describes this poverty essay debacle.

    Linda stated:
“then they willfully misread my essay. I can’t help that. I wish it were not so because I would rather be having a conversation.”
“If you have been poor or you’ve been raised poor it doesn’t hurt you to see somebody brought down, its kinda nice sometimes.”
These statements along with her “Sex, please” *shudder* blog, show a lack for the ability to empathize. Yet, just like Ann wrote, people were crying for more, more, more. In her video interview she claimed she was invited to speak to social workers to teach them how to be more empathetic. HA!
Ryan Grim: people can’t understand or believe how someone could write so well, is living in grinding poverty. Because, Ryan, she wasn’t living in grinding poverty, and the people who have experienced living in poverty knew she was not poverty stricken or had experienced poverty in any point in her life. People who have not studied or experienced poverty, interchange poverty with poor and broke. They are different. All very different.
So, if a person decides they are wanting to be an advocate for the poverty stricken, I’d advise them to do their homework. See, the “former poverty folk” are building gardens in our community. We are adopting children who share our same experiences. We are volunteering and teaching, we are…doing. Talk all you would like about poverty, but just like a physician would not allow a CNA to tell him how to perform an operation, you’d better have a solid knowledge/experience base if you expect anyone to listen. Our upbringing trains us to spot bs from miles away, so don’t insult us by acting like you know, when you don’t. You will be exposed.
And the Gawkerets think this is about timestamps. Please.

    • Let’s be clear – the ONLY support LT has is from her fellow gif nerds on GroupDrink – she has ZERO credibility with the mainstream media so even if she self-publishes a ‘book’ (which I doubt she has the discipline for) – all it would be is a 10 cent pulp fiction paperback.

    • Linda Tirado aka killermartinis is exhibiting more and more grandiosity and delusion, posting with a focus on her interactions with the rich and famous. Whatever track record she has is policy and advocacy, certainly no work that involved being around the poor. And she appears to have no track record in voluntarism. She has gone to ground, claiming that she is writing to a three-month deadline. Looks as though her new agent, if she has one, has decided that’s her shelf-life!

      • LT admitted herself that the essay was her ‘observations’ on what it’s like being poor and not exactly the life she was leading at the time – an obvious political spin – when all the facts about her background started streaming-in.

Her essay has been classified a fictional autobiography by outside sources.

The only success I see LT having in the short-term after her 15 minutes are up is actually writing about how she came up with the idea for the essay – perhaps after reading the study on cognitive skills that was published in August and determining that she could be the best candidate for this as there was a huge niche market that existed and was untapped.

LT has been on Twitter since 2007 and a blog on GroupDrink as KILLERMartinis so she had the benefit of getting information instantly – be that comments, feedback or ideas.

It would be interesting to see if she ever wrote about being ‘poor’ prior to August 2013.

      • And the “poor mes” are coming out of the woodwork. “I make $100,000 and I’m one paycheck away from disaster.” “I haven’t found work in 6 months and as I look at the Pacific Ocean from my home, I’m scared.
“The grand results of an everybody wins/instant gratification/I don’t control my own life society” An America full of people who don’t take their life into their own hands. It’s truly frightening.

  37. Some clarity from Professor Kathryn Edin

    Jessica Winter-Miami Herald:
” So in an alternate reality, how would the ideal version of “Poverty Thoughts” have shed an empathetic light on the plight of impoverished Americans? I posed this question to one of America’s most renowned poverty experts, Kathryn Edin, a professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. “She should have written, ‘My life is a disaster and I’m only below the median — how can we even imagine truly poor people making it?’ ” Edin says. “Or, ‘I have a relatively privileged background and education, and yet my decision-making skills have been impaired by the stress of my situation — how on earth are the poor getting by?’ ”

Such scruples and perspective perhaps aren’t the stuff of a viral blockbuster or brimming GoFundMe coffers. But they are an admission that a person can absorb the terrible, traumatic impact of what feels like hitting bottom, only to look closer and see how far down the bottom really goes.

    • I have a friend who is unemployed – he does not own a car – rides his bike to go shopping and to run errands – which not only saves him the obvious gas money and vehicle maintenance (and insurance payments!) – but makes him healthier.

Everyday he goes to an automotive junkyard and and hand wrenches parts off cars and then rides to a local Salvation Army story to buy items on sale – all of which are put on eBay and he makes enough to cover his bills and have money left over – but statistically he is at the very bottom of the poverty class – but in reality he is doing ok.

Cooks his meals everyday – never buys junk food or go to Wendy’s or McDonald’s – and is not on any government assistance.

That is why LT’s sob story did not resonate with me.

      • I’m really curious about people like your friend. I think parenting styles have a lot to do with the success of a child. That, and an inner drive.

        • I think you are correct Kimberly – as he is a former bike racer (so you need inner drive to go get off the couch and go training everyday!) and both his parents are immigrants – had to work in a factories 16 hours a day – not to stay only to pay bills but because they had a goal of purchasing their own house – which they did in 4 years of being in United States without having the benefit of speaking one word in English!

  38. Kimberly, Ted, Luxxe, and especially, Ann – thank you for what you’ve written and the work you’ve done here. I reposted this on the Nation’s article, “Linda Tirado is Not a Hoax”. This thread reminds that not everyone is blindly believes the latest trend or thinks it’s better to beg than it is to try do better.

    • I get where you are coming from. Personally, I don’t see what she did as begging and frankly begging is necessary when choices are not available. She had choices.
She is an opportunist and a manipulator who grabbed on to the poverty platform to make a name for herself. She is too lazy to finish college or too busy with the Jeze/Gawker crowd to volunteer. It’s disgusting to see my progressive party try and ride this dog and pony show. It’s no wonder Republicans want to cut off extended unemployment benefits. With examples like Ms. Tirado shoved in their face, it’s easy to turn a blind eye to what is really happening. Now, their world view of “laziness is the cause of poverty” has been confirmed. Sick.

  39. Rumor has it that LT is in Santa Barbara, CA discussing a book deal and a speaking engagement tour. Another business write-off for the ‘expenses’ after the brief trip to Las Vegas to celebrate birthdays.

Explains why there has been no Tweets on her Twitter account since Dec. 6th
    when she wrote…

    KillerMartinis ‏@KillerMartinis 6 Dec

@Just_Darrin yeah, man, I’ve been writing. Time to do the thing. Plus the emails. Trying to get through those.

    • Well maybe! She did go to Santa Barbara to hang out with Mac McGill, “homesless” celebrity. Since then there has been a PR campaign (demonstrated by google stats on the “definding linda” recent story). So her agent – if signed – could well be trying to resuscitate some sort of career for her. As another commenter put it, watch out for the speaker circuit, Linda – there’s usually a Q&A session to contend with!

      • It is a 10 hour drive to Santa Barbara from Utah and then spending time in SB with celebrities such as Mac McGill – then you still have a 10 hour drive back home – I wonder how she got time off work? I guess still no time to go to the dentist either?

  40. This one’s for Ravenpaine (note the very telling “sweet sweet free money” in the first para!!!:

Linda Tirado posting as KM in August 2013 on Groupthink (she applied without even knowing what course she wanted to do, just for the money!!!! Sick of working!!!) :

“So I quit my job and enrolled in school for fall semester. They’re willing to work with me on getting my scholarship back and things of that nature, but I have to declare a major by tomorrow. They told me yesterday about this, and I have until tomorrow afternoon to research employment rates in my two possible majors, figure out which is actually academically viable, pick one, and defend the decision. I only decided to go back to school a week and a half ago. I intended to start in spring, but they fast-tracked me through admissions and I start class Monday. I have no idea what they’re hoping to see, how to present it, or how to bolster my case for the sweet sweet free money. I haven’t been a student in a decade, and I really paid no attention to it when I was. I used to turn in papers written in Sharpie and assume I’d get an A on the merit of the work, but I hear they don’t go for that as much anymore and I have misplaced my favorite markers anyway. Any advice is welcome; this is all a bit overwhelming. A bit.

… then after a bit of a discussion, Linda Tirado makes it clear her house is mortgage free!:

I do have the option of incurring a year’s debt and going back for the money next year, but I hate to mortgage the house and I don’t have the credit for any other kind of loan. My stellar hubris as a teenager means I’m ineligible for any subsidized loans for my first year back until my GPA returns to something not so laughable. I’m wondering how they expect success if there’s no time to plan, but apparently people in my situation have usually gamed everything out before they reapply. I applied to see if they’d even let me in before I started to worry about funding or majors. “

    • Looks like pan handling runs in the family…

      KillerMartinis ‏@KillerMartinis 28 Nov

@MacMcGill7 Oh, god, man. My real dad did the homeless thing in San Diego for a while. He says the warm was nice but the busking was hard.

      KillerMartinis ‏@KillerMartinis 28 Nov

@MacMcGill7 but he liked it better than anywhere else he’d been because of the beaches

      KillerMartinis ‏@KillerMartinis 28 Nov

@MacMcGill7 I used to randomly busk with arias when I was feeling bold. They do not draw a crowd, my friend.

Tell us what you really think
