Continued: The curious business models of CEP News and Need to Know News

Ever since, I started following the strange story of CEP News, I've been convinced that the answer is out there on the internet. It's just a question of plugging the right search terms into Google as these cyber sleuths did in the course of discovering a Chinese spy ring:

He entered some of the code from those infected computers into Google. Just like that, he found one of the cyber-spy network's control servers, then another, and another. From that Eureka moment came a flood of information, almost all of it suggesting the ring originated in China.

A recent commenter here correctly noted:
Whatever the case is, looking at the prominent names involved is pointless. You won't get to the bottom of, say Geosign, by looking at Ted Hastings background, since he was brought in for no reason other than to flip the company. Likewise with CEP, it'll be pointless to look at the publicly identified individuals if you want to know the real story.
So, all you moles and reporters, look for those odd clues, the names that aren't out there publicly, the calls to the boss from some Forex desk, the bizarre site on which your story appeared before it was taken down, the lawyer's other clients, the money trail, the former employer, the wife, anything.

Take all information and google it and see what comes up and then, please, let me know.

Don't kid yourself that CEP News and Need to Know News are surviving on subscriptions for mediocre information in this day and age.

The Need to Know News Business Model -- is it the same as CEP News?

The comments are all abuzz with DexTV, but it's been a while since I've had any news about CEP News. This is not to say that I'm not still wondering about it, in fact, all the more so given everything that's happening to other companies with inexplicable business models.

In the course of some recent surfing, however, I came across this interesting but oldish and unconfirmed speculation about Need to Know News. At Virtual Economics, Mike Jackman comments:

Another interesting development is Need to Know News (NTKN) - they actually have a reporter in the government lockups and while they squawk the news as it breaks, they also send the data electronically to JED Capital for trading, by passing the newsires altogether.
Jackman also commented on an NTKN thread at Forex Peace Army (Don't even get me started on that name):
Great news service - alot of talk around that the guy in the government lockups that squawks the news to customers also sends the data electronically to JED capitial - the trading firm that owns NTKN!! Speculation aside, the coverage of government numbers can\'t be beat (unless you\'re JED ;)
Back when I was phoning around the US Senate Press Gallery about CEP News, I got wind of these rumours, but they seemed and still seem a little off to me. I do suspect, however, that both NTKN and CEP are in the same primarily non-news business, one which appears to be surprisingly recession proof.

There is also a small group of loyal readers keeping an eye on my CEP News coverage -- or lack of it -- including someone in Warrenton, Virginia and a few people in Montreal.

For now, the mystery continues, but I have a feeling the answers are on the way.
